Many problems. One Solution.
Local shelters and rescues are given the task of managing the after-effects of pet overpopulation. Displaced, abandoned and stray animals enter in alarming numbers. Some cats and dogs will be shuffled from one shelter to the next in an attempt to give it more time to find a home. Other pets are euthanized because there is simply no place to put them. This is the sad consequence of too many animals.
The Kalamazoo Humane Society is a different kind of animal welfare group.
Unlike shelters and rescues that house animals, the Kalamazoo Humane Society is on the front-lines of the battle against animal overpopulation by eliminating the reasons that put animals in shelters and rescues to begin with. The main objective of our mission: reduce the number of unwanted pets.
How do we do it? KHS uses donations and grant funding to provide low-cost spay and neuter services. One of the largest causes of pet overpopulation are unaltered dogs and cats that have unplanned and unwanted litters of puppies and kittens. These animals are then given away where they are unlikely to be spayed or neutered, left outside where they are homeless, or are taken to shelters and rescues.
